Numbers Race: A Hands-on Mental Math Activity
A fast group activity that turns arithmetic practice into a collaborative challenge full of movement.

Goal and materials
The activity develops mental math, attention, and teamwork. Divide children into small teams and prepare number cards from 1 to 20, operation cards, a timer, and a board for points.
How to play
A team draws two number cards and one operation card, then tries to solve the problem within 20 seconds. A correct answer moves the team one step on the race board; the next team plays when time runs out or an answer is incorrect.
- Start with addition and subtraction before adding multiplication and division.
- Adjust the difficulty or time limit to match the group.
- Ask teams to explain their thinking, not only give the answer.
What to observe afterwards
Notice whether every child participates and who benefits from visual support or extra time. Use those observations to plan a short follow-up round focused on the skill that needs more practice.
