How to Build a Love of Reading at Home
Simple ideas that make reading a warm, enjoyable time for understanding, imagination, and self-expression.

Start with one short story a day
A reading session does not need to be long to be valuable. Choose a short story that fits your child’s age and make it a calm, regular part of the day.
Read with expression and change your voice when a new character appears. Enjoyment helps children connect books with positive feelings.
Talk about the story afterwards
Ask what your child liked, what they think might happen next, and how a character felt. Keep the conversation relaxed rather than turning it into a test.
- Which character did you like?
- What would you do in their place?
- Does the story remind you of anything?
Let children take part in choosing
Keep a small selection of books within reach and let your child choose. A favorite story can be read many times; repetition builds understanding and confidence.
